Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday that Awami League no longer exists as an organisation in the country, describing it instead as a “mafia gang” whose activities are being closely monitored.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat, Salahuddin announced that army personnel have been deployed under the “In Aid to Civil Power” mandate to prevent any potential instability. This deployment, effective from Monday until 30 June, covers Dhaka Metro, Chattogram Metro, Narayanganj, and Gazipur Metro, along with two additional districts.

The move comes ahead of the founding anniversary of Awami League on Tuesday. Salahuddin noted that while the overall law and order situation has not deteriorated, security forces must remain vigilant against potential attempts to create unrest.

“We have observed some activities by this banned mafia gang, such as attempts to hold processions and meetings in several districts,” the minister said. “This suggests they may be plotting to create instability.

“Consequently, we have directed all our forces to remain on high alert.”

Salahuddin emphasised that the military deployment is specifically intended to address any “ill-motivated activities” and maintain public order through the In Aid to Civil Power framework.
