Veteran actor Dolly Johur has spoken candidly about her career and personal regrets, saying that older performers often struggle to retain audience appreciation.
In a recent interview, Dolly Johur said, “No one likes older artists. This is true in our country,” expressing concern over what she described as a decline in affection from audiences.
She added, “Nowadays, my audience doesn’t love me anymore. They make hasty comments because they don’t love me. They don’t understand that a person’s foundation can be shaken by those comments.”
Reflecting on her long career, she said she had never expected to face criticism. “I never thought that anyone would say anything negative to me. I swear to God, I never thought that. But now I understand that people say this too,” she said, reiterating that attitudes towards ageing artists have changed.
Speaking about her achievements, Dolly Johur noted her five decades in the industry and the recognition she has received. “I had many achievements in my 50 years, I got a lot, I got the love of the audience. I liked the interest people had in watching me,” she said. She also reflected on uncertainty about how she would be remembered, adding that such thoughts may ultimately be beyond her control.
Dolly Johur has been honoured with the Ekushey Padak and a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her contribution to national cinema.
Over the years, she has appeared in more than 150 films and established a strong presence in Bangla cinema, alongside a long career in television drama.
After a gap of nearly a decade, she recently returned to the big screen with the film ‘Domm’, directed by Redoan Rony.
