There is currently no militant threat in Bangladesh, and law enforcement agencies are continuing operations and intelligence efforts to arrest militants who escaped from prisons, a senior counter-terrorism official said on Saturday.
Munshi Shahabuddin, joint commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, made the remarks at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre following the discovery of bomb-like objects at Dhaka’s Farmgate and Mirpur-10 metro rail stations on Saturday afternoon, which caused concern among commuters and the public.
The CTTC official said police investigations found that neither of the objects was an explosive or posed any threat to public safety.
According to DMP officials, the bag recovered from the Mirpur-10 metro station contained a container used for betel nuts and spices, while the bag found at Farmgate contained waste materials.
Shahabuddin said authorities have intensified intelligence surveillance and are closely monitoring social media platforms to prevent potential security threats.
“Those involved in planning sabotage or attempting to spread rumours are being identified, arrested and investigated,” he said.
The CTTC official urged people not to touch any suspicious or abandoned objects and to immediately inform the nearest police station or call the national emergency service number 999.
