The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR) has approved the formation of three new upazilas and one new thana.
The approval came during 121st NICAR meeting held on Wednesday at Cabinet Division conference room in Secretariat, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu confirmed the developments, saying the committee approved the creation of three new upazilas — Fatikchhari North in Chattogram, Bangara in Cumilla, and Pagla in Mymensingh.
He added that Halda has also been approved as a new thana in Chattogram.
Fatikchhari North upazila will be constituted of six unions from the existing Fatikchhari upazila.
Bangara upazila will be formed by dividing the Muradnagar upazila in Cumilla. In Mymensingh, the Pagla upazila will comprise eight unions of Pagla Thana under Gafargaon upazila.
Additionally, the new Halda thana has been established by dividing the existing Hathazari thana in Chattogram.
Shiplu also said a decision was taken to incorporate areas of Narayanganj and Gazipur, which fall under the Rajuk Purbachal New Town Project, into Dhaka district.
