India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has arrived in the country, pledging to address visa-related challenges through mutual sincerity and cooperation.
The veteran politician, accompanied by his wife Mrinal Trivedi, entered Bangladesh through the Benapole land port immigration checkpoint in Sharsha, Jashore, at approximately 12pm on Friday.
Upon his arrival, Trivedi emphasised a vision of unity, framing the combined 1.6 billion people of India and Bangladesh as a single entity. “We will solve the visa issue together,” the high commissioner said shortly after entering Bangladeshi territory.
“It is not just a shared border; we have shared dreams. Our sky is one, our air is one, and in many cases, our challenges are also the same. Therefore, there is no room for our path to go wrong.”

Trivedi, 75, a former Indian union minister and a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is the first politician to be appointed as the Indian envoy to Dhaka in 55 years. He identified the relationship between the people of both nations as his “sole priority,” describing the populations as “brothers and sisters.”
“I am not thinking of [the two countries] separately,” he said, noting that he chose to walk across the border. “Through love and mutual sincerity, all problems can be solved.”
At the Benapole-Petrapole no-man’s land, the high commissioner was officially received with floral wreaths by Pavankumar Tulsi Das, the acting Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, and Arif Mahmud, deputy chief of protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Other officials present at the reception included Shamim Hossain, director of Benapole Port; Fazle Wahid, Sharsha upazila nirbahi officer (UNO); Syed Mortaza Ali, officer-in-charge of Immigration; and Ashraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station.
Following the completion of immigration and protocol formalities, Trivedi departed for Dhaka under security escort.
