The love story behind the Bridgerton family is getting its own series. Netflix is expanding its hit period drama with a new limited spin-off centred on a young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the man who becomes the family matriarch’s husband.
According to Variety, Netflix and Shondaland announced the untitled project on Thursday. The series will follow a similar approach to the 2023 spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which explored the early life and romance of Queen Charlotte. Netflix has yet to confirm an official title, although a name along the lines of Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story could follow that format.
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will lead the new project as showrunners, writers and executive producers. Nardini previously produced Queen Charlotte and wrote for Rhimes’ ABC drama Scandal. Tom Verica, a frequent Rhimes collaborator whose credits include Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, will direct and executive produce. Betsy Beers, a longtime creative partner at Shondaland, will also serve as an executive producer.
The series will trace Violet’s early life and her romance with Edmund, according to its official synopsis. It aims to offer a similar look at the relationship that shaped the Bridgerton family, following the global success of Queen Charlotte.
English actress Ruth Gemmell plays Lady Violet in the original Bridgerton. Connie Jenkins-Greig portrayed the teenage Violet Ledger in Queen Charlotte. Netflix has not confirmed whether Jenkins-Greig will return for the new spin-off, or whether any other cast members from either series will reprise their roles.
Meanwhile, Bridgerton season five is in production in London. The upcoming season will centre on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza.
The main series remains a major draw for Netflix. Season four debuted at No. 1 on the streamer’s Global English TV list. Queen Charlotte, which ran for six episodes in 2023, also opened at No. 1 in 91 countries.
