Anurag Kashyap-backed Marathi psychological thriller ‘Gadi’ will premiere at the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF), scheduled to run from 29 October to 1 November, states Hindustan Times.
The film stars Raj Sane alongside Kishore Kadam, Shirish Kulkarni, Shabnam Nad and Hadelin De Ponteves.
Set in a small hamlet in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, the story follows a grieving father who confronts the unsettling realisation that he has no free will.
‘Gadi’ marks the feature-film debut of self-taught filmmaker Rohan Pingal, who wrote, directed and shot the project. Ranjan Singh, Kashyap and Rajendra Pingal produced the film.
The production was filmed across the Konkan region, Sangli and coastal Maharashtra. Ankush Boradkar composed the music, while Ameya Tanavade served as executive producer.
Speaking about the film, Pingal said the story relies on silence and what remains unspoken, rather than explaining everything to the audience. He added that Kashyap and Singh supported his creative vision from the beginning and did not pressure the team to simplify the narrative.
Kashyap praised Pingal’s distinctive approach, saying it challenges conventional filmmaking practices. He recalled meeting the filmmaker during post-production, when Pingal showed him visuals created for the film’s pitch. Kashyap said he was impressed that the team had developed the visuals independently, away from established visual effects studios.
The filmmaker also expressed curiosity about how audiences would respond to ‘Gadi’ at the festival, welcoming the opportunity for viewers to experience the film and interpret it in their own way.
