Despite a festive atmosphere nationwide, most polling centres in Gopalganj witnessed minimal voter presence on Thursday during the 13th national parliamentary election.
Observers reported that many centres appeared nearly empty, with a significant number of staff and agents present relative to voters.
The district, a known Awami League stronghold, saw low voter engagement across all three constituencies—Gopalganj-1, 2 and 3—which together have nearly one million registered voters.
In Sadar Upazila, agents of both the BNP and independent candidates were notably present.
Historically, Gopalganj-3 has been Sheikh Hasina’s constituency, with the party winning by a large margin every election. This year, however, Awami League’s activities were banned, leading to notable voter apathy.
In Gopalganj-2, repeated victories by MP Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim have left little room for opposition parties to establish a strong presence. Rebel BNP candidates and Jamaat-backed Khelafat Majlis supporters have some local following, but general voter enthusiasm remains low.
Law enforcement maintained strict oversight across the district. The heavy presence of joint forces is expected to gradually encourage higher voter turnout.
Security measures were tightened following cocktail attacks at several polling stations the previous night. Patrols by joint forces were visible throughout the day. The district administration has taken comprehensive steps to maintain order.
Meanwhile, business establishments in Gopalganj town remained closed, and public transport was largely suspended except for essential services.
