Leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Dhaka Metropolitan North have accused the government of failing to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and livelihoods, citing rising child mortality, weaknesses in the vaccination system, and a worsening law and order situation across the country.
The allegations were made at a human chain programme titled “Citizen human chain for children’s life and safety,” held on Wednesday afternoon in front of Ananda Cinema Hall at Farmgate in the capital.
The event was organised by the Tejgaon Zone of NCP Dhaka North.
Party leaders, representatives of various social organisations, and concerned citizens took part in the programme.
Speaking as chief guest, NCP central senior joint convener and Dhaka North convener Ariful Islam Adib said the country’s child mortality situation had reached an alarming level, which he termed unacceptable.
He called for immediate and effective measures to reduce child deaths and urged authorities to stop shifting responsibility.
He also demanded accountability from the interim government, the Ministry of Health, and relevant officials in the health sector, along with departmental investigations and necessary administrative action.
Adib further alleged that the government was failing to ensure public safety, claiming that incidents of murder, mugging, extortion, and other criminal activities had increased significantly nationwide, creating widespread insecurity among citizens.
Referring to recent incidents, he mentioned reported killings in Gazipur and rising mugging cases in several areas of the capital, including Mohammadpur. He urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to prioritise law enforcement and improve the overall security situation.
He also expressed concern over border killings and called for stronger diplomatic efforts to prevent the killing of Bangladeshi citizens along the border.
NCP joint member secretary Gazi Salauddin Tanvir also spoke at the programme, describing the situation of rising child deaths as deeply alarming and urging urgent reforms in the healthcare system.
Jatiya Jubo Shakti central joint general secretary Nishat Ahmed also expressed concern over the issue. Other participants included NCP Dhaka North joint member secretaries Mahin Talukder and Md Oheduzzaman Suman, co-organising secretaries Md Nur Amin Khan and Taufiq Niaz, along with other local leaders.
Representatives of several social organisations also expressed solidarity with the programme, including members of the Commission for Prevention of Enforced Disappearances, including Mohammad Kaiyum.
Speakers at the human chain urged the government to take urgent steps to address child health risks, strengthen the vaccination system, improve law and order, and ensure overall citizen security.
