Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election.
He shared the assurance after the 15th meeting of the Council of Advisers on law and order at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Responding to claims from some political parties about biased transfers and postings of government officials, he rejected the allegations. “We have not received any such complaint,” he said, adding that all postings were made after proper verification and without favouring anyone.
He urged journalists to report if any irregularities or bribery occur in postings or recruitment and requested all quarters not to seek preferential treatment for such postings.
On another question, Jahangir Alam said that if political parties act responsibly and citizens do their part, the election will proceed properly. “The next election must be held in a proper manner,” he emphasised.
He also said the government is considering reducing the maximum number of mobile SIM cards registrable under one person’s name from 10 to 7 before the election, and eventually limiting it to 5.
He noted crimes committed using SIM cards registered under false identities remain a concern.
Referring to several recent major fire incidents, the adviser called on the media to play a role in raising public awareness about fire safety.
Speaking on recent murders reported in Rangunia and Raozan, he said law enforcement agencies are working intensively to curb such crimes.
Regarding clashes in Brahmanbaria, he stressed the need for a social movement to put an end to such wrongdoing.
