Intelligence agencies have warned of potential militant attacks on Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, law enforcement offices, religious sites, and key areas such as Shahbagh, leading to the issuance of a nationwide Red Alert.
Police Headquarters has alerted all units and ordered heightened protection for vital installations across the country due to sabotage plans by a banned militant organisation.
According to a letter signed on 23 April by the DIG (Confidential) of Police Headquarters, Range DIGs, Metropolitan Commissioners, and all district police superintendents have been instructed to strengthen security measures.
The directive follows reports that Istiaq Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakkar or Abu Mohammad, a recently arrested member of an extremist group, was in regular contact with two dismissed members of a security force.
This group is suspected of planning attacks on the National Parliament, law enforcement members, and entertainment centres.
Intelligence suggests that the militants may use bombs, sharp weapons, or firearms to carry out these strikes. There are also indications that the militants may be planning to target the armouries of various security forces.
Law enforcement agencies have classified these individuals as a high risk to overall national security. Consequently, authorities have been urged to increase surveillance at important establishments and take immediate legal action against suspects.
When contacted late on Friday night, several police officials declined to comment on the specifics of the letter. Notably, the alert follows a visit to Bangladesh by several Taliban leaders a few months ago.
