Police have arrested notorious criminal Sajjadul Islam Monir, alias “Boma Monir” and Moktar Hossain Sohan in separate raids in Tongi. Monir faces multiple charges including murder and extortion, while Sohan is the primary accused in the attempted murder of a journalist.
The arrests were made last Tuesday during an operation in the Ershadnagar area under Tongi East Police Station jurisdiction. The arrestee Monir is 38 years old, while Sohan is 25.
“Boma Monir” was arrested in an operation led by Tongi East Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Mazharul Huq. Monir faces multiple charges, including murder, firearms possession, and extortion. He was shown arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sent to prison via court order, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (South) SM Shafiqul Islam said while speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.
In a separate drive led by ASI Umar Faruk, police arrested Sohan, the key accused in an attack on Daily Inqilab journalist Maruf Ahmed.
Additionally, he faces a total of seven cases, including mugging and drug offenses. A mugging video recently went viral on social media, showing Sohan armed with a local weapon, stopping a bicycle to rob a rider.
Tongi East Police Station has arrested and produced 520 suspects before the court in recent continuous crackdowns. The arrestees include muggers, narcotics traders, key fugitives with active arrest warrants, and accused persons in multiple cases,” according to ASI Faruk.
Faruk also said that such operations will continue to control crime, arrest lawbreakers, and maintain normal law and order.
