NCP convener and opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has called for the immediate removal of the country’s president, describing him as “fascist.”
He criticised parliament for allowing the president to address it, saying it represented a betrayal of the people’s aspirations.
Speaking at the NCP’s Mymensingh divisional Iftar and prayer gathering at the Circuit House grounds, Nahid Islam said, “The president must be removed immediately. A new president should be elected. The president must be held accountable for genocide and oath-breaking.”
Addressing criticism over the party’s parliamentary participation, he added, “Despite widespread criticism, we went to parliament because the people elected candidates of the 11-party alliance. We are there to implement reforms, activate upper house, and pursue constitutional amendments.”
Referring to recent political violence, Nahid Islam cited an arson attack on the residence of Khaled Saifullah, organisational secretary of the Dhaka University unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti.
“Through secret killings and arson, the Awami League has consistently tried to maintain its political dominance. Action must be taken against those responsible. I urge the people of Mymensingh to resist these acts of terror,” he said.
The event was attended by senior NCP leaders, including chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, NCP MP from Kurigram-2 Atik Mujahid, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti president Zahid Ahsan, and other central and divisional party leaders.
Leaders of the 11-party alliance, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, were also present.
