Although the outer appearance of Old Dhaka has evolved over the years, its deep-rooted traditions still pulse through every corner. While the local community remains vibrant, the growing presence of outsiders, bringing new influences and challenges, has both enriched and complicated life in this historic part of the city.
Capturing these contrasts, noted playwright and director Faridul Hasan is set to bring the stories of Old Dhaka’s neighbourhoods to television through his upcoming drama series, ‘Moholla’.
Produced under his direction, the star-studded series has already begun shooting across multiple locations including Old Dhaka, Sadarghat, Uttara and Farmgate. Written by Bidyut Roy, Moholla is slated to premiere on private television channel Boishakhi TV on November 1.
The ensemble cast includes Zaher Alvi, Iffat Ara Tithi, Abdullah Rana, Rocky Khan, Reshmi Ahmed, Shahid Un Nabi, Tanmoy Sohel, Siam Mridha, Siam Nasir, Ashraful Alam Sohag, Tanvir Rahi, Ifti, Saba Sushmita, Ananya Islam, Imran Hossain Azan, Wahid Iqbal Marshall, Saika Ahmed, Pauline, Upma Ahmed, Anjuman Mehezabien, Javed Gazi, Ayesha Nafisa and Anubhav Mahbub, among others.
Dhallywood actress Irene Sultana will be seen in a special role, portraying the female lead in the series.
Speaking about the project, director Faridul Hasan said, “This is a story about the joys and struggles of a neighbourhood. The daily events and quirks of our urban lives are portrayed with humour. Many popular artists are part of it. ‘Moholla will bring a sense of relief in these turbulent times. It’s a story worth watching.”
He added, “People often say family stories are no longer told, but I believe that’s not true. Family stories are rare, and that makes them even more important. ‘Moholla’ reflects that belief.”
Sharing her experience, Irene said, “I play the role of Madhu, a popular film actress who is invited to perform at a kite festival in an Old Dhaka mohalla. After that, a series of dramatic events unfold. I hope viewers will enjoy the serial when it airs.”
Actor Zaher Alvi, who grew up in Old Dhaka, added, “We have so many untold stories from our mohallas. It feels wonderful to see them come alive on screen.”
Adding a musical touch, the series will feature an item song titled Tanpura, sung, composed and arranged by CloseUp One star Muhin, with lyrics by Bidyut Roy. Irene performs in the sequence, choreographed by Michael Babu, while Titu Shikdar designed the set decoration.
With its blend of humour, nostalgia and heart, ‘Moholla’ aims to capture the warmth and spirit of Old Dhaka’s communal life, offering audiences a slice of comfort amid uncertain times.
