Mobile phone traders have formed a human chain demanding reforms to the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR).
The demonstration was organised by the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB) on Sunday in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area.
As part of their pre-announced programme, the traders kept their shops closed and gathered on the street holding placards and banners.
Participants said the NEIR, if implemented in its current form, will “harm countless businesses and families” while benefitting only a small group.
They warned that increased taxes would push up mobile phone price. The traders demanded prior consultation with existing market stakeholders and called for a balanced tax structure for manufacturers and retailers. Otherwise, they threatened to launch a tougher movement.
As the day progressed, more traders from Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Dhanmondi and other parts of the capital joined the demonstration, leading to slow traffic around the areas. Additional police were deployed at the scene.
According to a government announcement, all unauthorised mobile phones will be blocked from December 16. Once implemented, the use of unregistered, stolen, or illegally imported mobile phones on the country’s networks will be completely prohibited.
