Midnight clash between DU and Dhaka college students

A violent clash erupted between students of Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College students turning Nilkhet and New Market areas into midnight battlefield as both sides threw bricks and stones at each other.

As part of de-escalation, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Shadik Kayem and other DU student leaders were seen attempting to calm the situation. Additionally, a significant number of police were deployed in Nilkhet and New Market areas to control the violence.

Regarding the incident, Mohammad Jahangir, Assistant Commissioner of the New Market Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that the conflict stemmed from an altercation over a street vendor operating in front of Shahnewaz Hall of Dhaka University. This led to a chase and counter-chase between the DU and Dhaka college students.

Police and DUCSU leaders could persuade the agitating students and now situation is under control.

A police officer said a probe is undergoing to determine the cause of conflict. If necessary, legal action will be taken, he added.
