The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael has already moonwalked its way into the record books before it has even reached cinemas.
Within just 24 hours of its release, the teaser trailer for the Antoine Fuqua-directed film amassed an astonishing 116.2 million views, making it the most-watched music biopic trailer in history and the biggest trailer launch ever for Lionsgate, according to analytics firm WaveMetrix.
The numbers eclipse previous record holders including ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ (96.1 million) and ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ (60.1 million).
Scheduled for release on April 24, 2026, Michael stars Jaafar Jackson, the late superstar’s nephew, in the titular role. The film promises to trace the Thriller singer’s extraordinary journey, blending his trailblazing artistry with an exploration of his personal complexities and lasting cultural impact.
“I’m humbled and honoured to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life,” Jaafar shared on Instagram. “To all the fans around the world, I’ll see you soon.”
Produced by Graham King, who previously delivered the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, the project has been years in the making. King said Jaafar’s uncanny connection to his uncle made him the obvious choice for the role.
“When I first met Jaafar over two years ago, I was struck by how naturally he embodied Michael’s energy and spirit,” King told Variety. “Even after an exhaustive global search, it was clear he was the only one who could take this on.”
Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson, echoed that sentiment, telling the publication, “Jaafar truly captures my son’s essence. It’s a joy to see him continue our family’s legacy of performers.”
The cast also features Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller and Juliano Krue Valdi, who portrays a young Michael.
