The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a chargesheet against the former police chief Benazir Ahmed over allegations of illegally amassing assets worth Tk11.4 crore.
The anti-graft watchdog confirmed the matter in a statement issued on Monday.
ACC officials said letters have been sent to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada to obtain detailed information regarding Benazir’s assets and business investments in those countries.
Benazir Ahmed is a former inspector general of police (IGP) and one of Bangladesh’s most influential law enforcement officials of recent years. Before becoming IGP in April 2020, he served as commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and later as director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
During his tenure at Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the elite force came under scrutiny from international rights groups over allegations of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.
In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on Benazir and several other senior RAB officials under the Global Magnitsky Act for human rights violations.
After retiring from the police in September 2022, Benazir’s name resurfaced in major corruption investigations.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has accused him and his family of amassing significant illegal wealth both at home and abroad, including land and business interests across the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Authorities have already seized hundreds of crores of Taka worth of assets linked to him, while an inquiry continues into international holdings.
Benazir has repeatedly denied all allegations.
