Argentina captain Lionel Messi has yet to decide whether he will feature at the upcoming World Cup, despite the tournament being just 76 days away.
Before the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against France national football team, Messi had indicated it would be his last appearance on the global stage. However, after leading Argentina national football team to a dramatic title win, he has continued to represent his country, maintaining a strong presence despite occasional injury setbacks.
With the next World Cup fast approaching, uncertainty remains over his participation. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed that the final decision rests entirely with Messi.
Speaking ahead of a friendly against Mauritania national football team, Scaloni said: “That is a question for him. I am doing everything I can to have him at the World Cup. For the good of football, I believe he should be there. But it depends on his physical and mental condition.”
Scaloni acknowledged the global desire to see Messi return. “Not only Argentinians, but everyone wants him to play. I want him there too, but the decision is his. There is no pressure — we trust he will choose what is best for himself and the team.”
Despite the uncertainty, Messi has been included in the squad for upcoming friendlies against Mauritania and Zambia national football team. Scaloni indicated that while Messi is expected to feature, it remains unclear whether he will start.
Argentina will open their World Cup campaign against Algeria national football team on 16 June, before facing Austria national football team and Jordan national football team in Group J.
