The match against Zimbabwe in the tri-nation series in Abu Dhabi was supposed to be Litton Das’s first step as Bangladesh’s full-time ODI captain. However, the wicketkeeper-batter has been ruled out of the entire tournament with a right hip joint injury, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physiotherapist Bayejedul Islam Khan confirmed on Saturday.

In a video message released by the BCB, Bayejedul said Litton complained of pain in his right hip on Friday. An MRI scan subsequently revealed a problem in the joint, ruling him out of the series.

“Litton Kumar Das complained of pain in his right hip joint yesterday, so we conducted an MRI scan. The report showed that he has a problem in his right hip joint,” Bayejedul said.

Litton attempted a fitness test on Saturday in the hope of playing in the opening match against Zimbabwe, but failed to meet the required benchmark.

“He still tried to complete the fitness test today to see whether he could play. However, he could not meet the benchmark we wanted, so he is unavailable for this series,” Bayejedul added.

Bangladesh vice-captain Towhid Hridoy had indicated Litton’s absence at the toss at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, saying the captain had “some injury issues”.

Bangladesh lost the toss and were asked to bat first in the opening match of the tri-nation series.
