Lionel Messi revealed that the tears he shed after scoring for Argentina at the FIFA World Cup were linked to a personal issue and not football.

The Argentina captain scored in his team’s 3-0 win over Algeria in their Group J opener. After finding the net with a fine strike, Messi wiped away tears with his shirt during the celebration.

Speaking after the match, Messi said the moment was connected to events in his personal life.

“The tears were due to something completely unrelated to football,” Messi said. “I have had a personally difficult few days.”

Reports later suggested that Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, has been dealing with health problems.

According to British newspaper The Sun, Jorge was admitted to hospital in January after his condition worsened. He underwent several medical tests, including heart examinations. The report added that his health has declined further in recent weeks.

The situation is believed to have weighed heavily on Messi as he prepared for the World Cup.

Jorge has played a major role throughout Messi’s life and career. He was among the first to spot his son’s talent and supported his football journey from a young age.

He helped Messi join Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and worked hard to support treatment for his growth hormone deficiency during childhood.

For many years, Jorge also managed Messi’s career and business affairs. He handled contracts, sponsorship deals and other important decisions.

The close bond between father and son has remained strong throughout Messi’s rise to becoming one of football’s greatest players.
