Rail communication between Kurigram and the rest of the country remained suspended from Thursday morning after a sand-laden truck overturned on a railway track in Rajarhat upazila, causing severe disruption to train services and hardship for passengers.
The truck overturned on the railway line at around 6:30am, blocking the track, said Konika Akther, Officer-in-Charge of Kurigram Railway Station.
She said efforts were underway to remove the vehicle but it was not yet possible to say when train services would resume.
The Dhaka-bound Kurigram Express failed to reach Kurigram Railway Station on schedule due to the blockage. Operations of the Ramna Commuter train were also disrupted.
The suspension left hundreds of passengers stranded. Many were forced to arrange alternative transport to Teesta Railway Station to continue their journeys.
Railway officials said the Kurigram Express was scheduled to leave Kurigram Railway Station for Dhaka at 7:10am. However, the train could not reach the station because the track remained blocked.
After receiving information about the incident, railway authorities, local administration officials and rescue teams rushed to the site and began work to remove the truck and restore train movement.
