Lionel Messi arrived in Rosario on Sunday to say a final goodbye to his father, Jorge Messi.
Jorge died at the age of 68 after battling illness for a long time. He had played a major role in his son’s journey from a young footballer in Rosario to one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
Messi travelled to Rosario from Fort Lauderdale. His wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their children also travelled with him.
Messi left the airport in a van under police security. Jorge is expected to be buried in Perez, near Rosario.
Argentine media outlet TyC Sports reported that the funeral will remain private. Only family members and close friends are expected to attend.
Fans have still gathered outside the cemetery to show their support for Messi and his family. Many wanted to stand beside the Argentina captain during one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Jorge remained closely involved in his son’s career for many years. He supported Messi from his childhood and also worked as his agent.
Messi will now spend time with his family, including his mother Celia. Inter Miami are also giving him the time he needs before returning to the club.
Messi was due to play against Monterrey in the Leagues Cup. However, Inter Miami excused him from the match after his father’s death.
Tributes have arrived from across the football world. Barcelona and Real Madrid sent messages of support to Messi and his family. Newell’s Old Boys and Rosario Central also expressed their sadness.
Inter Miami also paid tribute to Jorge before their match against Monterrey.
The players observed a minute of silence before the game. Fans showed their support with signs carrying the message “Fuerza, Leo,” which means “Stay strong, Leo.”
Rodrigo De Paul then delivered his own emotional tribute.
The Argentina midfielder gave Miami the lead with a fine strike from outside the box. After scoring, De Paul removed his shirt and showed Messi’s No. 10 shirt underneath.
De Paul dedicated the goal to Messi, his captain with Argentina and one of his closest friends.
Miami could not turn the emotional moment into a victory. Monterrey fought back and won the match 2-1.
