A medical student has been arrested in connection with the death of an HSC examinee who fell from the rooftop of a multi-storey hotel in Rangpur city.
The arrestee, Shariar Shakil, a final-year student of Rangpur Medical College and a resident of the city’s Dhap Chiklibhata area, was detained from the medical college campus by the Detective Branch (DB) police on Tuesday afternoon.
In a briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said the arrest was made based on a case filed by the victim’s father and preliminary evidence collected during the investigation.
Police said the victim, Nujhat Jahan, an HSC examinee of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College, fell from the rooftop of North View Hotel on Monday evening and died on the spot.
According to investigators, there was a romantic relationship between the victim and the accused, and she was allegedly subjected to mental harassment.
Officials also claimed that digital evidence and data supported the allegations, although no active applications were found on the victim’s phone, which had reportedly been reset before her death.
CCTV footage shows Nujhat entering the rooftop restaurant area at around 4:54pm. She is seen using her mobile phone for nearly an hour before climbing the rooftop railing at around 5:42pm and falling shortly afterwards.
The victim’s father, retired army member Nazrul Islam, filed a case at Kotwali Police Station, questioning why his daughter had gone to the rooftop restaurant instead of attending private tutoring as planned. He demanded a fair investigation and justice.
“I want to know why she went there. I demand justice for my daughter,” he said.
The accused, however, denied the allegations, claiming he had been the victim’s teacher and had stopped teaching her after noticing personal interest from her side. He said he later cut off all contact.
He also claimed that he went to the Detective Branch office on Tuesday afternoon voluntarily to clarify his position, where he was detained.
Police confirmed that he was later handed over to Kotwali Police Station, arrested in the case, and sent to jail following a court order. Investigations are ongoing.
