Two more children suffering from measles have died in the isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), bringing the total number of fatalities to 22.
In the 24 hours leading up to Friday morning, 24 new patients were admitted, while 63 children are currently undergoing treatment at the facility.
Associate Professor Dr M Golam Maola, the focal person for the hospital’s measles medical team, confirmed the developments on Friday morning.
According to hospital records, one of the deceased was a 10-month-old child from Kalmakanda, Netrokona, who had been admitted on the night of 25 April. The infant passed away at approximately 10pm on Thursday due to complications from measles, pneumonia, and cardiac issues.
The second fatality was a 5-month-old infant from Islampur, Jamalpur, who was brought to the hospital early Friday morning and died at around 10am. Medical officials stated that this child was also suffering from pneumonia and heart failure alongside measles.
Data provided by the hospital indicates that between 17 March and the morning of 1 May, a total of 996 children have been hospitalised with measles symptoms.
During the last 24 hours, 28 children were discharged after recovery, bringing the total number of discharged patients to 911. Additionally, one child was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment during this period.
Dr Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, Assistant Director (Administration) of MMCH, noted that while isolated cases of measles began appearing in February, the pressure of patients intensified significantly from mid-March.
To manage the crisis, the hospital has formed three medical teams and strengthened treatment operations within an isolation ward located on the 8th floor of the hospital’s new building.
