Two more children showing symptoms of measles have died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in the last 24 hours, raising concerns over the spread of the disease in the region.
With the latest deaths, the number of child fatalities linked to measles symptoms in Barishal Division has risen to 39, while 26 of the deaths were reported at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital alone.
The deceased were identified as Ali Azgar, four months old, son of Moniruzzaman from Mathbaria Upazila, and Muaj, three months old, son of Rahat Gazi from Patuakhali. Both were undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Hospital authorities said 55 new patients with measles symptoms were admitted in the past 24 hours. At present, 204 patients are receiving treatment there.
According to data from the Directorate General of Health Services, Barishal Division, a total of 6,083 people have so far been affected by measles-related illness across the division.
Of them, 189 cases have been confirmed as measles through diagnosis.
