Kylian Mbappe set a new World Cup record on Tuesday, becoming the leading scorer in knockout-stage matches after scoring twice in France’s 3-0 win over Sweden.
The France forward took his tournament tally to six goals, level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
France secured their place in the last 16 with a controlled victory, with Mbappé once again the decisive figure in attack.
His second goal arrived in the 75th minute, a powerful right-footed strike from the edge of the box that sealed the result and underlined his influence on the match.
The brace moved Mbappé onto 18 World Cup goals in total, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who finished his career with 16. It also made him the outright leader in knockout-stage scoring history.
Messi also sits on 18 World Cup goals, but has played across six tournaments compared to Mbappe’s three.
France now turn their attention to the last 16, where the competition tightens and margins become smaller.
