The implementation of the Matarbari deep seaport will significantly enhance Bangladesh’s international trade and transshipment capacity, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced during his budget speech on Thursday.
The minister also proposed an allocation of Tk60,730 crore for transport infrastructure development in the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year, up from the revised allocation of Tk48,292 crore in the current fiscal year.
The finance minister said the government is implementing various activities to develop infrastructure in the shipping sector, modernise ports, and increase the capacity of inland waterways to build a cost-effective, safe, and efficient transport system.
He announced the strengthening of infrastructure development in the shipping sector and the enhancement of inland waterway development activities as part of this effort.
The minister said dredging activities will be expanded, and container and cargo handling efficiency will be improved.
River ports and launch terminals are being modernised, he added. New equipment is being added to increase Mongla Port’s capacity, along with jetty management improvement and strengthened cargo handling activities.
The finance minister further said construction of the Chattogram Bay Terminal, Patenga Container Terminal, and Laldia Container Terminal is underway. Dredging and excavation activities in key waterways have been strengthened to keep them navigable.
“International trade and an integrated shipping system will be strengthened through the construction of modern seaport infrastructure,” the finance minister said.
