Marvel has unveiled a heartbreaking new chapter in Spider-Man lore, revealing the tragic events that lead to one of Peter Parker’s darkest possible futures in Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1, states Screen Rant.

The one-shot revisits the long-teased “Last Stand” Spider-Man storyline, finally explaining why an older Peter Parker abandoned his long-held refusal to kill and ultimately met his fate in a final battle against a futuristic police force.
Written by J. Michael Straczynski, with artwork by Luigi Zagaria and colours by Matt Milla, the story, titled Soft Words at Sunrise, is set around the events of The Amazing Spider-Man #500.
It follows Mary Jane Watson as she reflects on her life with Peter Parker, revisiting a future that had remained one of Marvel’s biggest unanswered mysteries for more than two decades.
The issue expands on a brief glimpse first shown in The Amazing Spider-Man #500, where an older Spider-Man shared words of wisdom with his younger self before making one final stand against heavily armed authorities at Aunt May’s grave.
The new comic reveals the devastating events that led to that moment.
According to Mary Jane’s account, Aunt May was murdered by a member of a rogue police unit equipped with stolen Stark Industries technology and protected by immunity from prosecution.
The tragedy pushed Peter beyond his moral limits.
Determined to avenge his aunt, Peter tracked down the officer responsible and killed him, marking the first time he deliberately took a life.
The act transformed him into a fugitive, with law enforcement launching a relentless manhunt against the former superhero.
Knowing there was no path back, Peter shared an emotional farewell with Mary Jane before accepting his fate.
Rather than continue running, he chose to confront the pursuing forces at Aunt May’s gravesite, where he made his final stand against overwhelming odds.
The “Last Stand” version of Spider-Man has long been one of Marvel’s most recognisable alternate takes on the character, thanks to his distinctive red leather jacket and simplified costume.
However, until now, readers had never learned the circumstances that drove him to abandon his lifelong principles.
By revisiting the storyline, Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1 not only provides long-awaited closure to a decades-old mystery but also places Mary Jane at the emotional centre of Peter Parker’s final chapter.
