Two children were killed and four others injured after a CNG-run autorickshaw collided with a locally made three-wheeler, known as a votvoti, in Sherpur’s Nakla upazila on Thursday evening.
The accident took place around 7:30pm in the Dhanakusha area on the Nakla-Nalitabari road.
The deceased were identified as 17-month-old Mujahidul Islam and Nahid Hasan, 15.
The injured were Mujahidul’s parents, Monirul Islam, 30, and Nilufa Yasmin, 25, along with Furkan Hamid, 30, and Jahanara Begum, 55.
Police and local sources said Monirul was returning home to Phulpur with his wife and son in a CNG-run autorickshaw after attending a family event in Nalitabari. When the vehicle reached Dhanakusha village, it collided head-on with an oncoming votvoti.
The impact threw Mujahidul, who was sitting on his mother’s lap, onto the road, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Nakla Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Nahid Hasan, another passenger injured in the crash, was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital but died on the way.
The other injured passengers were treated at Nakla Upazila Health Complex.
Mujahidul’s father Monirul Islam said he was returning home after visiting his sister’s grandson when the accident occurred.
“After two daughters, Allah blessed me with a son. Now my only son is gone. Will I ever get justice?” he said, breaking down in tears.
Nakla Police Station Sub-Inspector Lokman Hossain said Mujahidul’s body was taken to the police station and an inquest report was prepared.
Both the CNG-run autorickshaw and the votvoti have been seized, he added.
