A Dhaka court on Monday sent Obaidur Rahman, the maternal uncle of Mariam Khatun, to jail upon completion of a four-day remand in a case filed over abetment of her suicide.
Mariam was the second wife of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order after case Investigation Officer (IO) Inspector Mohammad Salauddin produced the accused in court and sought his detention in jail.
Prosecution Sub-Inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the order.
Obaidur’s defence counsel, Golam Saber Chowdhury, submitted a bail petition, following which the court scheduled the hearing for Tuesday.
Obaidur was initially sent to jail on 23 September following his arrest. On 28 September, Inspector Salauddin petitioned for a five-day remand.
Following a hearing on Thursday in the presence of the accused, the court granted a four-day police remand.
Case details
Police recovered Mariam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban, on the evening of 20 September.
Later that night, police took Gazi Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case alleging abetment of suicide against Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda, and Obaidur Rahman.
On 21 September, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station SI Md Shamsujjoha Sarkar produced the accused in court, where a four-day remand was granted for Gazi Nazrul and a one-day remand for Maksuda.
The case investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) that same night.
Maksuda was sent to jail on 22 September following her one-day remand, while Gazi Nazrul was sent to jail on 28 September after serving eight days of remand across two phases.
Earlier on 30 September, defence counsel Mahabubur Rahman moved bail petitions for both Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda before Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah.
The lawyer informed the court that a compromise had been reached between the defendants and the complainant, SM Masum Billah, adding that the plaintiff side had no objection to bail.
The court subsequently granted bail to Maksuda but rejected the bail prayer for Gazi Nazrul.
Meanwhile, defence counsel filed a fresh bail petition for Gazi Nazrul on Monday. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam fixed Wednesday for the hearing on his bail plea.
