A man has allegedly thrown acid at his former wife and then stabbed her following a divorce in Habiganj.
Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Zahidul Haque and Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Shahidul Haque Munshi confirmed the matter. The victim has been identified as Rubina Akter, 25. The former husband has been identified as Uzzal Mia, 28.
According to the victim’s family, Rubina married Uzzal two years ago. Following disagreements on various issues, she divorced him around six months ago. Uzzal reportedly became incensed after Rubina took a job at PRAN Company, and had been harassing her on her way to and from work.
At around 9pm on Thursday, while Rubina was returning home, Uzzal, who was lying in wait, threw acid at her face and stabbed her. Locals rushed to the scene upon hearing her screams, prompting Uzzal to flee.
Family members said her face was severely burnt. She was initially taken to Habiganj District Sadar Modern Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Rubina’s father, Barik Mia, said, “Uzzal fled after throwing acid on my daughter’s face. I want proper justice.”
ASP Shahidul and OC Zahidul, along with other police members, rushed to the hospital and dispatched officers to the scene.
OC Zahidul said legal action would be taken based on the investigation.
