A young man was stabbed to death following a dispute over a Tk50 bet during a cricket game in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, leaving two others injured.
The victim was identified as Md Arif Hossain, 20, and the incident occurred around 7:30 pm on Friday in Rugurampur village under Ward No 3 of Jirtali union.
Arif was the son of Siraj Mia of Bancharam Bari in Kutubpur village of the same union.
Police and local sources said Arif worked at a factory in Dhaka with his uncle and had returned home seven to eight days earlier.
On Thursday afternoon, several local youths were playing cricket with a wager behind their houses when an argument and dispute broke out between two groups.
When Arif tried to mediate, he was assaulted later that evening by a youth named Prahim at Sajur’s tea stall, after which locals temporarily resolved the matter.
On Friday evening, Arif was attacked again in Rugurampur village, where assailants stabbed him on the left side of his chest, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed him to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The victim’s elder brother Akil said Prahim, 21, and Saiful, along with several others, had beaten Arif on Thursday evening when he tried to stop the dispute over the cricket game.
He added that the attackers struck again on Friday evening, stabbing Arif as well as his cousins Umair, 21, and Omar, 22.
Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shamsuzzaman said the killing stemmed from a dispute over a cricket game played with a wager.
He said police had visited the scene and that necessary legal action would be taken upon receiving a written complaint.
