A man identified as Yasin Khan Palash, 50, was shot and critically injured in the capital’s West Rampura area on Friday afternoon. He was recently released from prison after serving 25 years in a murder case.
The incident took place at approximately 1:45pm in front of the Royal Mishti Dokan. Palash was returning to his residence after performing Jummah prayers at the Muktir Goli Mosque when he was targeted.
Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibne Mizan said two youths had been lying in wait at the entrance of Makki Masjid Goli, opposite the TV Centre.
As one of the assailants opened fire, local residents attempted to chase them. However, the gunmen managed to escape on a motorcycle that had been parked a short distance away. Palash was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by his housekeeper Ibra Mia.
Officer-in-charge of the DMCH police camp Md Faruk confirmed that the victim sustained two bullet wounds to his head. Palash is currently in the operating theatre, and his condition is reported to be critical.
DC Mizan noted that the victim is a “top terror” who had recently been released from prison. Palash had served 25 years for the murder of an individual and was freed only one month and eight days ago. Palash was a notorious criminal popularly known as “Kailla Palash,” he added.
Police are now working to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
