Six individuals were detained by local residents on Friday morning for allegedly slaughtering horses and attempting to smuggle the meat from an abandoned rice mill in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha.
The incident took place at a defunct chatal (drying floor) belonging to Khairul Islam, located in Khorddo Rasulpur under Jamalpur union. According to local sources, the suspects had secretly slaughtered six horses and were preparing to traffic the meat by mixing it with beef.
Upon discovering the activity, an angry mob apprehended the suspects and notified the authorities. During the commotion, some residents reportedly vandalised the tin fencing of the premises. Police arrived shortly after to bring the situation under control.
The detainees have been identified as Mominur Rahman, Mintu Mia, Hridoy Hossain, Rajib Hossain, Mamun Mia, and Jobaydur Rahman. They are reported to be residents of various districts.
Following the incident, Sadullapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmudul Hasan, Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Habibur Rahman, Livestock Officer Sirajul Islam, Union Parishad Chairman Zahid Hasan Shuvo, and Member Nurunnabi Pradhan visited the scene.
Sadullapur Police Station OC Habibur Rahman said police forces were deployed to stabilise the area, and a mobile court was subsequently conducted by the UNO.
UNO Mahmudul confirmed that legal proceedings are underway against the involved parties based on the evidence found at the site.
