Police have identified the man who was stabbed to death during a Tazia procession brought out on the occasion of Holy Ashura in the Banglabazar area of Old Dhaka on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Md Zakir, 30, was the son of Md Jahangir Hossain and hailed from BC Das Street Lane in Lalbagh.
According to law enforcement and intelligence sources, the killing is suspected to have been linked to a previous dispute or group rivalry.
The incident occurred during a Tazia procession organised by the Ashkan Committee of Bibika Rawza under Sutrapur Police Station.
The procession, brought out as part of Ashura observance by members of the Shia community, began from Bibika Rawza in the area.
Police said a confrontation broke out between two groups at the rear of the procession, during which Zakir was attacked with a sharp weapon and critically injured.
He was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Matiur Rahman said efforts were underway to identify those involved in the killing.
“CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify the attackers. Legal action is underway,” he said.
Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident.
