Babu Mia (70), an elderly man, died after coming to cast his vote in the 13th national parliamentary election at Mahadebpur in the Manikganj-1 constituency.
This heartbreaking incident occurred at around 11:20am on Thursday at the Mahadebpur Government Primary School centre in Shibaloy upazila.
He was a rickshaw-van puller by profession.
According to eyewitnesses, Babu Mia had arrived at the centre in the morning to cast his vote in a festive atmosphere. He had properly collected his voter slip and was standing in line.
But, before he could vote, he felt severely unwell and collapsed. Although those present tried to assist him, he died of a stroke on the spot.
Eyewitness Abdul Mannan said in a tearful voice, “Babu had just come to the centre to vote a little while ago. The man passed away right before our eyes. Before he could even cast his vote.”
This tragic death amidst the election fervor has spread a dark cloud of sorrow over the hearts of the people of Mahadebpur area.
Local administration and officials on duty have confirmed the truth of the incident and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
Mahadebpur Union Chairman Md Shahjahan expressed grief over this untimely death and prayed for the salvation of his soul. He said, “After such a long time, this election felt like the joy of Eid, but his death has cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire area.”
