Man beaten to death over theft allegation in Magura

A 40-year-old man was beaten to death in Jangalia village of Mohammadpur upazila, Magura, on Tuesday morning over allegations of theft.

The deceased, identified as Israfil, son of Atiyar Rahman, was reportedly attacked by a group of local residents who accused him of stealing three mobile phones and Tk 1,600 in cash.

According to Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahman, the mob forcibly dragged Israfil out of his house at around 6:30am and assaulted him severely. He was later rescued by police and locals in critical condition and rushed to Mohammadpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead shortly after admission.

Israfil’s body has been sent to the 250-bed Magura General Hospital for autopsy.

“A murder case has been registered and we are currently investigating the incident,” OC Abdur Rahman said.
