A Dhaka court has placed Major Sadikul Haque and his wife Sumaiya Zafrin on a five-day remand each in separate cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order, Assistant Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman said on Monday.
Investigating officers sought seven days’ remand for Major Sadikul known as Major Sadik and Zafrin in the cases filed at Vatara Police Station and Gulshan Police Station respectively.
The cases were filed over a “secret meeting” of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, and its banned student organisation, Chhatra League (BCL), which took place on 8 July.
Major Sadik was first shown arrested in the case before the remand hearing took place on Monday. Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman presented arguments in favour of the remand prayer.
However, defense lawyer Al Amin sought bail for his two clients during the hearing. The court later rejected their bail petitions and granted five days’ remand.
The investigating officer, Inspector Md Jihad Hossain of DB Police’s Gulshan Division, filed an application on 15 December to show Major Sadek arrested. The court then set 24 December for a hearing on the matter.
However, as Sadik was not produced before the court that day, the hearing did not take place. On the same day, the investigating officer applied for seven days’ remand of Sadik. The court then scheduled 29 December (Monday) for the hearing.
