State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Mir Shahe Alam on Saturday said that local government elections will be held immediately after the relevant ordinance is passed as law in Parliament.
The state minister further clarified that no party symbols will be permitted in these local government elections. He made the remarks while responding to journalists’ queries at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after paying floral tributes at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
Fourteen newly appointed district council administrators accompanied the state minister during the visit.
Shahe Alam explained that the interim government had previously issued an ordinance containing the provision to exclude party symbols from local polls.
A special committee has already reviewed the ordinance and submitted its report to Parliament. According to the state minister, the ordinance will be presented for enactment shortly, and election preparations will commence as soon as it becomes law.
Regarding the appointment of the district council administrators, the state minister noted that dedicated BNP leaders who could not be provided with nominations for the national parliamentary elections were selected for these administrative roles. He further emphasised that their activities and performance would be subject to accountability.
