Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has assured that local government elections will be held on schedule, despite the recent appointment of administrators in six city corporations.
Addressing concerns that the administrative changes might delay the polls, Minister Fakhrul told reporters that the government strictly follows established rules and regulations regarding terms of office.
“We will schedule the elections at the appropriate time, giving them full priority,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Fakhrul, who also serves as BNP secretary general, visited the BNP central office in Naya Paltan, exchanging greetings with party workers and staff.
This marked his first visit to the party headquarters since assuming office as Local Government Minister.
On the eligibility of candidates for women’s reserved seats in Parliament, Fakhrul said the final decision rests with Parliament. He added that nominees should align with the party’s ideology, maintain strong connections with the public, and demonstrate dedication and sacrifice for the party.
Priority will be given to members with long-term involvement and proven commitment. Regarding whether two members of the same family could be nominated, he said no decision has been made yet.
Responding to reports of new Awami League offices opening across the country, Fakhrul stated, “We did not support this. Legally, their activities are restricted, and this will be monitored and addressed accordingly everywhere.”
At the start of his briefing, the minister paid tribute to the late BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, recalling her pivotal role in Bangladesh’s democratic movements.
“This central office has been the hub of democratic struggles under her guidance. She led the 1990 mass movement, formed the government in 1991, and strengthened democracy in subsequent years,” he said.
Highlighting the party’s future under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, Fakhrul expressed confidence that the BNP will grow stronger and continue working toward a prosperous Bangladesh, in line with the vision of the party’s founder, President Ziaur Rahman.
The briefing at Naya Paltan was attended by senior BNP leaders and party officials.
