The High Court on Sunday sought the latest whereabouts of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officers accused of shooting and paralyzing Limon Hossain in Jhalakathi.
The court also issued a rule asking why Limon should not be awarded Tk2.6 crore in compensation for losing his leg in the incident.
The bench comprised Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar, which directed the concerned parties to respond within four weeks.
Barrister Sara Hossain, representing the petitioner, told the court that the rule was issued to determine why the various forms of harassment faced by Limon should not be declared illegal and unconstitutional, and why it should not be considered a violation of his fundamental rights.
The rule also seeks to examine why he should not be compensated for the loss of his leg.
The court also seeks to examine why compensation should not be granted for the injury he suffered.
Limon, who lost his leg after being shot by RAB, had earlier filed a writ petition seeking compensation.
The incident occurred on 23 March 2011 during a RAB operation in Saturia village of Rajapur upazila, Jhalakathi. Limon told reporters that RAB members took him into custody and shot him in the leg.
A few days later, doctors from National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation at Dhaka were forced to amputate his left leg.
The attack took place just 12 days before Limon’s Higher Secondary Certificate examinations, when he was only 16. Defying immense odds, Limon has since overcome his challenges and is now teaching at a university.
