Lightning strikes kill four in Gaibandha

Four people, including a child, were killed in separate lightning strikes in Gaibandha on Sunday afternoon, officials and locals said.

Three of the deaths occurred in South Dhopadanga village under Sundarganj upazila.

The deceased were identified as Fuad, 14, son of former Union Parishad chairman Jahangir Alam Suja Chowdhury, Rafi, 15, son of Choton Mia, and Mizan, 20, son of Nabir Hossain.

According to local residents and witnesses, the sky became overcast with dark clouds around 4pm, followed by rain and thunder. The two youths and the child were standing on a road near their homes when they were directly struck by lightning, resulting in their immediate deaths. A cow nearby was also killed in the strike.

Another youth, identified as Shamim (18), son of Abdul Hai Mia of the same village, sustained injuries during the incident. He was rescued and admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

In a separate incident on the same day, an elderly man named Nombar Ali (65) was killed by a lightning strike in Saghata upazila.

The sudden deaths of three residents from the same village have cast a shadow of profound grief over the area. Upon receiving the news, representatives from the local administration and public officials visited the homes of the deceased to offer their condolences to the bereaved families.
