The government has directed all licensed arms holders to surrender their weapons to the nearest police station by 31 January, as part of efforts to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful national election.
According to a notification, the display and carrying of licensed arms will remain strictly prohibited until 15 February, in accordance with the announced election schedule.
However, the restriction will not apply to candidates whose nomination papers have been validly submitted and accepted by the Election Commission, or to armed ‘retainers’ duly authorised for them.
The notice cautions that violators will face legal consequences under the relevant provisions of the Arms Act, 1878.
Authorities say the move is aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing intimidation or unrest during the election period. The 13th parliamentary election is scheduled to be held on 12 February.
Superintendents of police, along with other relevant authorities, have been directed to take steps to enforce the order.
On 15 December, the government introduced a policy governing the issuance of firearm licences and the appointment of armed retainers for politically significant figures and election candidates in the run-up to the election.
