No trials over police killings in July uprising: Home minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that there will be no legal proceedings regarding the killing of police officers during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

The Minister made the remarks on Sunday while speaking to reporters following a meeting with officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence at the Secretariat.

He clarified that participants in the movement have been provided with legal immunity concerning the deaths of police personnel, a provision that is enshrined in the ‘July Charter‘.

Salahuddin further noted that BNP is a signatory to the July Charter, and the current government will conduct its operations in alignment with the document’s guidelines.

In response to questions regarding recent criminal activity, the home minister confirmed that the individuals involved in the shooting at a businessman’s house in Chattogram have been identified.

He asserted that they would be brought under the law within the shortest possible time.

Reviewing the national security landscape, he claimed that the law and order situation in the country has seen marked improvement in the 13 days since the current government took office.

Addressing the continued presence of the military, the home minister revealed that the armed forces no longer wish to remain deployed in the field for a variety of reasons.

However, he emphasised that the duration of their deployment remains a matter of government decision.
