Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud on Sunday said city corporation elections will be held after Ramadan, following the completion of several by-elections.
“We hope the city corporation elections will be held shortly after the month of Ramadan,” he said. “Before that, several by-elections will take place. The schedules have already been announced and the polls will be held in due time.”
He made the remarks as chief guest at the annual general meeting and election of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy at the media centre of Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.
Masud said the Election Commission will remain engaged throughout the year and in the coming years due to a series of local government elections.
He said the Commission has a legal obligation to conduct free and fair elections, while Parliament is responsible for enacting election-related laws.
The Commission is also awaiting Parliament’s decision on whether local government elections will be held using political party symbols, he added.
Masud said the recently held 13th parliamentary election and referendum were conducted peacefully.
He urged journalists to perform their duties impartially and to offer constructive criticism of the Commission’s activities.
