Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradeep Chakma said that the existing land disputes in the Hill Tracts must be resolved through dialogue involving all stakeholders.
The adviser made the comment at a programme in Rangamati on Saturday.
He said that landholding in the Hill Tracts is largely community-based, which must gradually shift toward ensuring individual ownership and shares through digital means.
“The days of measuring land by gestures are over,” he said.
He said in many countries, there are master plans for land management, where land use, ownership, and planning are clearly defined.
“Bangladesh also urgently needs digitalisation in land management, particularly the preparation of zoning maps,” he said.
Supradeep Chakma said that often the same land is sold to multiple parties, while headmen and karbaris (village chiefs) lack effective mechanisms to prevent fraud.
He said that land disputes are a major reason behind widespread poverty in the Hill Tracts, highlighting the need to establish environmentally friendly land management systems.
“There is no alternative to digitalisation if we are to end corruption in land administration,” the adviser added.
At the event, Supradeep Chakma also urged all concerned to work sincerely to ensure that the upcoming Durga Puja and the Buddhist religious festival of Kathin Chibor Dan can be celebrated in a safe and joyous atmosphere.
He gave directives to the district administration and police to take effective measures in this regard.
