Garment workers staged a demonstration and blocked the road in Azampur area of Uttara, demanding a minimum monthly salary of Tk30,000.
Around 11am on Monday, hundreds of workers from various garment factories gathered to protest for higher wages.
At one point, they blocked the road, halting traffic movement on one side and causing severe congestion in the surrounding areas.
Due to the blockade on Airport Road, commuters heading to work, passengers, and pedestrians suffered significant hardship. Passengers trapped in traffic jams were left distressed by the intense heat.
The protesting workers said their minimum monthly salary must be fixed at Tk30,000, considering their current cost of living.
Upon receiving news of the blockade, police personnel arrived at the spot.
Following assurances and cooperation from the police administration, the workers lifted the blockade after an hour and returned to work, allowing traffic on the Airport Highway to return to normal.
Uttara Division Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) KHM Ershad confirmed the matter.
“When we reasoned with them, they vacated the road. Traffic movement on the road is currently normal,” he said.
