Khulna University (KU) has expelled 12 students and taken disciplinary action against 7 more over allegations of ragging, assault, drug abuse, and religious defamation. The information was confirmed by Prof Nazmus Sadat, director of Student Affairs at KU.
According to the office of the Director of Student Affairs, the decisions were made during the 27th meeting of the university’s Disciplinary Board held on 9 October, following the submission of multiple investigation reports.
Md Mobarak Hossain Noman, a student of the Bangla discipline, was permanently expelled for assaulting a teacher. His academic certificate was revoked, and he received a lifetime ban from entering the campus.
However, the revocation of his certificate was later conditionally suspended after he issued an unconditional apology.
In drug-related cases, Hasan Howlader from the Economics department and Aminul Islam from Mass Communication and Journalism were permanently expelled. Similarly, Md Zahidul Islam from the Law department was expelled for his involvement in a campus brawl.
Two other Law students, Meheraf Hossain Rabbi and Aminul Ahsan, were required to submit written undertakings signed by their guardians, pledging not to repeat any disciplinary violations.
In connection with ragging incidents, KM Rauful Alam Arnav of the Mathematics department was suspended for 6 months. 3 others- Rimon Mia, Ahsan Habib, and Salman Hossain- were fined Tk 5,000 each and asked to submit undertakings.
In separate incidents, Umar Faruk and Sadman Ud Doula of the Education discipline were suspended for the current term, while Moniruzzaman Riyad of Business Administration and Ziad Al Sams of Education were fined Tk 5,000 each.
For issuing threats and using abusive language, 3 Mathematics students- Babul Akter Durjoy, Rashed Khan Menon, and Bandhan Roy- were suspended for 6 months.
Additionally, Md Rasel Sheikh of Mass Communication and Journalism was permanently expelled, and Tanoy Roy was suspended for 2 years for posting blasphemous remarks about Islam on Facebook.
Members of the KU community have largely supported the disciplinary actions, saying such measures are vital to preserve campus discipline and uphold moral and religious values.
