90 days have passed since the murder of Islamic University (IU) student Sajid Abdullah, yet the perpetrators remain at large. The authorities have failed to arrest anyone involved in the killing.

Although the administration had previously assured students the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would handle the probe and ensure justice, no visible progress has been made so far.

Out of frustration over the prolonged inaction, students on Wednesday staged a symbolic protest at the university’s Bot Tola, marking the 90th day since Sajid’s death. They installed a signboard that read, “Warning! Today marks the 90th day of Sajid’s murder! Am I next?”

The protesting students said they had grown tired of hearing repeated promises of justice from the authorities. That is why, instead of approaching the administration again, they are expressing their anger through this unique protest on the 90th day of Sajid’s murder.

Students questioned the delay in justice, asking why haven’t the killers been arrested even after 90 days? A student was murdered and dumped in a pond inside the university- how safe are the students here?

Expressing deep frustration, student Borhan Uddin said, “Today marks 90 days since the murder of Sajid. But it pains us to think that we might still be walking around campus alongside his killers. Justice is being delayed while the administration remains silent.”

He further asked, “How much longer will the administration delay? Are they waiting to observe the 100th day of Sajid’s murder?”

Leaders and activists of various student organisations also joined the protest, expressing solidarity with the demand for justice. They urged all students and political groups to remain united until the killers are brought to justice.

On 17 July, the body of Sajid Abdullah, a student of the 2021-2022 academic session, was found floating in a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall on the university campus.

Although it was initially suspected that he had drowned, a forensic report later confirmed that Sajid had been strangled to death. 2 months after his death, the CID officially took over the investigation into the murder case.
